Intro
SpeakerHow long was the shortest recorded war in history? The answer to that at the end of the show. Welcome to Quizzical, the show where trivia knowledge and self-assurance collide. I'm Scott Strosahl, and joining me today are two brave souls who said, sure, when asked if they wanted to be recorded thinking out loud. This is the last of four head-to-head matchups, and the winner of today's episode will join the three previous winners in a final showdown next week. Today we have games involving letter edition and athletic juxtaposition. And along the way, we'll also crown another people's champion with the answer to last week's listener question. So play along, pause if you need to. Hindsight is undefeated. We've got questions, we've got answers, and we've got at least one fact today that will feel useless until suddenly at some point in the future, it isn't.
Contestant Introductions
SpeakerNow let's meet our two contestants and get to the trivia. First up, we have Will, a Survivor fan from Toronto. Welcome, Will.
Speaker 2Yes, hi, thank you for having me.
SpeakerYeah, so when did you first get into Survivor? Was it like season one or are you more recent?
Speaker 2Yeah, no, season one from the beginning. Yeah. And it's the 50th season right now, so it's a pretty, pretty exciting time for it.
SpeakerYeah, yeah. My wife and I used to watch it some a long time ago, and then we just kind of haven't for a while. But uh so who was your favorite contestant? Do you have a favorite?
Speaker 2Is that like picking your favorite child or uh no, I'd say uh one of my favorite contestants is uh Adam Klein from the 33rd season.
SpeakerOkay, okay. Any particular reason?
Speaker 2Just uh just really you know related to him. Uh, you know, had some some things that went on in my life that he was going through at the same time, so yeah.
SpeakerOkay. Yeah, yeah, makes sense. Uh would you ever want to be on Survivor, or do you just prefer to watch it?
Speaker 2Absolutely not. Um when I was younger, I think probably, but now that I've gotten older, no. I I much prefer just watching it.
SpeakerYeah, yeah. From the comfort of your living room, yeah, where you're eating whatever you want and staying warm and all that jazz. Yeah. Although they oftentimes they're in warmer places, right? So maybe you're staying cool. I don't know. Exactly. All right. And next up is Tyson, a bookstore worker from Utah.
Speaker 1Yep, I woke up there's a book and cut to the type from Utah.
SpeakerUh, do you have a favorite book?
Speaker 1Um, my favorite book is I love to read um the Book of Mormon, another testament of Jesus Christ.
SpeakerGreat. Yeah. I was gonna ask if you have a favorite author, but I guess there we go. That answers that question as well. Yes. Um, and and I understand you love airplanes, donuts, the Utah Jazz, and being pranked. So I imagine an ideal day for you would be if you were flying on the plane with the jazz players and they gave you a powdered sugar covered bagel and told you it was a donut, maybe? Um, that'd be awesome. There we go. All right, very nice. Cool. All right, great. Well, now that we know each other, are we ready for our first game? Yes. Yeah. Perfect. Then let's get quizzical.
Game 1 - 'Top me off'
SpeakerAll right, for round one, we're starting off with a game called Top Me Off. In this game, every answer will be two words, and the second word will be the first word with a letter added to the beginning. I've got an example for you, so that might help. If I said your candlelight isn't very hip, you would answer lame flame because flame is lame with an F added on, and candlelight is a flame, and it's not very hip because it's lame. Does that make sense?
Speaker 2Always at the beginning of the word is where those are.
SpeakerIt's always going to be at the beginning. It's always going to be the first word plus a letter at the beginning will give you the second word. Yep. Correct. Alright, we're gonna buzz in to answer, but if you get it wrong, your opponent will have a chance to steal. Tyson, your buzzer sounds like. And Will, your buzzer sounds like. Alright, any questions before we get going on the first game here? Here we go. Question number one: an angry buccaneer. Will.
Speaker 2An irate pirate?
SpeakerVery good. An irate pirate, yes. Nice. Okay, next question. A tardy food receptacle. Will again. A late plate. A late plate, very good, very good. Yep. Okay, question three. The cry of excitement you make while spinning a disc around your waist. This one's a little bit trickier. Alright, we're gonna say no one gets that one. That's okay. It was hoop whoop. That was a tricky one. Alright. Next question. The cost of a bag of the grain that is a staple in much of the world. Well. Rice price. Rice price, very good, yes. Alright. Next one. Long-winded talk about soap suds. Yep, alright, we're gonna say no against that one either. It was lather, blather.
Speaker 1Oh, okay.
SpeakerYep, yep. Blather being long-winded talk. Lather, soap suds, yep. Alright, next question. The rating you received for your six-pack abs. Or maybe we'll say the rating you received for the center of your apple. Oh Will. Core score? Core score, you know. Alright, next question. What you do at the self-checkout with your soda receptacle? Will. Can scan? Can scan. Very nice. Alright, and a final question. That collection of water vapor in the sky is pretty noisy. Will. Loud cloud. It's a loud cloud. That's right. Yep. Very good. Very good. Alright, well, great job, both of you, but especially good job to Will, who's one step closer to making the final. And Tyson, you'll have to win the next game to force a tiebreaker and keep your hopes alive. Yes.
Listener Question
SpeakerAnd now it's time for the answer to last week's people's question. As a refresher, last week's puzzle was to finish this sequence 2, 8, 18, 32, and 50. And the next number is 72. There are a couple ways to come to that answer, but if you know the square numbers, you may notice that all of the numbers in the sequence were double the square numbers. So a square number is when you multiply the same number times itself. So 1 times 1 is 1, 2 times 2 is 4, 3 times 3 is 9. So you get 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, etc. And the numbers in our speakings were 2, 8, 18, 32, 50, which are exactly double the square numbers. So the next number is double 36, which is 72. If you figured that out, good job. But this week's winner is Roger Lester, who also happens to be a patron. So congratulations, Roger. And also, thank you, Roger. We'll post that on all our socials so you can share it with your friends to prove you are a champion. And while we're talking about patrons, I'll mention we have a Patreon. If you would like to support this show financially, go to patreon.com slash quizzicalfm or just go to our website quizzical.fm and follow the links from there. I'd like to keep this show ad-free, so we do need support from those that are able. We'll be posting some more trivia over there that you can do as well. Just like the visual geography round that we posted a couple weeks ago. If you haven't seen that, go to patreon.com slash quizzicalfm and you can check it out. And that one's available for free, so you don't have to sign up to do that one. But if you're able to, we appreciate it. And now for this week's listener question, I have another story for you today. A woman walked up to a man behind a counter and handed him a book. He looked at the book and said, That will be four dollars, ma'am. She paid him and then walked out without the book. The man saw her leave, but did not try to stop her or let her know that she forgot the book. Why? If you think you know what was going on in this story, send us a message to people at quizzical.fm or simply go to quizzical.fm and click on the leave a voicemail button and submit your answer in audio form, and you could be next week's People's Champion.
Game 2 - 'Double Play'
SpeakerAlright, and with that, it's time for our second game. Will Tyson, are you guys ready?
Speaker 1Yes.
SpeakerYep. Our second game today is called Double Play. This game is like the classic before and after category on Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune, but with athletes' names. So every answer will be a mashup of two athletes, with the last name of the first person being the first name of the second person. For example, LeBron James and James Harden would become LeBron James Harden. Okay? And in the clue, look for the becomes, the word becomes, because that will link the description of the first person to the description of the second person. Okay? We're gonna take turns on this one so you can put the buzzers down and feel free to talk it out. Think out loud before you answer. But if you miss, your opponent will get a chance to steal. Alright, we're gonna start with Will. First questions for Will. Here we go. The only woman to win an IndyCar Series race becomes a three-time Super Bowl MVP.
Speaker 2Danica Patrick Mahomes?
SpeakerDanica Patrick Mahomes, very good. Yeah, you got it. Alright, next question's for Tyson. Okay. One of the greatest point guards of all time, whose nicknamed CP3, becomes the first baseman who has won the most Silver Slugger Awards and led the National League in both home runs and RBIs in 2013.
Speaker 1Okay. I know um the basketball player is Chris Paul, but I'm trying to think of the um the baseball play is Paul. I don't know why shoemaker is coming to my mind. Paul shoemaker?
SpeakerThat's not like Chris Paul shoemaker, right? So is that what you're going with? Yes. Sorry, you almost you're close. Not quite correct. Will, can you steal that one? Is it Chris Paul Goldschmidt? It's Chris Paul Goldschmidt. Very good. Yep. You were there. You were so close, Tyson. You were right there. Yep. Alright. Will, next question is for you. The first subject of the eponymous ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction becomes a decorated tennis player known for his confrontational on-court behavior.
Speaker 2Oh, what's his name? Is that Tommy John McEnroe?
SpeakerIt is Tommy John McEnroe. Very good. Tommy John. The Tommy John surgery is named after him, and John McEnroe is the tennis player. Yeah. Yep, very nice. Okay. Tyson, next question's for you. Okay. The first person to break Babe Ruth's career home run record becomes the first quarterback with a career passer rating over a hundred.
Speaker 1Boy, I'm getting all these baseball playoffs in my mind right now.
SpeakerOh yeah, sure. Yep. But which is the right baseball player?
Speaker 1I have two um playoffs in mind that I have right now. I have Barry Bond and then I have Steve Young. But I'm trying to think how they would go together.
SpeakerYeah, so if it's Barry Bonds, then you need a quarterback whose name first name is Bonds. And if it's Steve Young, you need a baseball player whose last name is Steve.
Speaker 1Yes, yes. Um nothing's coming to me um right now.
SpeakerAlright, we're thinking along you're thinking good, but I'm gonna say you're not gonna get there because it's not Barry Bonds or Steve Young. So good good thoughts, but Will, can you steal that one?
Speaker 2The best guess I can come up with is Hank Aaron Rodgers.
SpeakerHank Aaron Rodgers is correct. Hank Aaron is the one that broke the career home run record. Yep, yep. And then Aaron Rodgers. I was surprised that he was the first quarterback with a career passer rating over a hundred.
Speaker 2I wasn't a hundred percent sure because he's not like he's not retired, so I didn't know if I was supposed to be thinking of a retired player, but then I was pretty sure about Hank Aaron, so I was like, okay, I think it must be Aaron Rodgers.
SpeakerAlright, very nice. Okay, next question is for Will. The world number one basketball player for most of the 90s becomes the world number one golfer in 2015 after winning the Masters and US Open.
Speaker 2Okay. Um I assume I know the basketball player. Um I don't think I know the good golf player. Let me think. No, I don't know golf enough, so I don't have an answer for that at all.
SpeakerAlright, well, you got you got part of it? You want to take take a guess?
Speaker 2Uh no, I don't know well enough to guess, so I'd rather not say the first part of it.
SpeakerYou're just gonna say no. You gotta have it. Okay.
Speaker 2Yeah, I don't I don't have an answer.
SpeakerAlright, Tyson, can you steal? Okay.
Speaker 1Michael Jordan. And I don't know the golf player. I don't watch golf too much. Um Yeah, it's a tough one.
SpeakerSo you got somebody's first name is Jordan. Do you know any golfers whose first name is Jordan? Um, Jordan. Um All the golf fans are yelling at their um phones or computers or whatever devices they're listening to this on right now. Yeah.
Speaker 1They're like, how do you guys not know this? Umordan, Jordan. Um I need to think of a last name that pops into my head.
SpeakerJust make up a last name, sure. Why not? Jordan Anderson. Just as good a guess as any. No, it's Jordan Speith, I believe is how it's pronounced. S-P-I-E-T-H Speath.
Speaker 2I don't think I've ever heard that name before in my life, so I was never gonna say.
SpeakerMichael Jordan Speeth, yep. Yep. All right, so no one gets that one. Okay, the next next one is for Tyson. All right, Tyson. The center who won eleven NBA championships in 13 years becomes a quarterback who has won one championship in 13 years.
Speaker 1Okay, I'm trying to um think of the center.
SpeakerUm 11 championships in 13 years is a long time.
Speaker 1Oh yes, yes. Oh what is his name that um played for the Boston Celtics? Um Walt Cool Walt there was uh his last name is Pirish that play that played for the Boston Celtics, I believe. But I can't think of any quarterbacks with the first name of Pirish. It could be Walt Chamberlain and Chamberlain.
SpeakerAlright, so you're thinking Wilt Chamberlain? Is that what you're thinking?
Speaker 1I was thinking either Walt Walt Chamberlain or um Walt oh that's his name, Walbert Pirish. One of those two.
SpeakerThose are those are both good, good thinking, but um I don't think you're getting there because those are incorrect. So, Will, can you steal this one?
Speaker 2My basketball knowledge is not great, especially older, but the only name I can think of would be potentially Walter Payton Manning.
SpeakerOoh, that's a very good guess, but um no. Um, I believe Walter Peyton was also a football player.
Speaker 2Okay.
SpeakerBut um, but with Peyton Manning, that's I can see where you're going. That's good. No, this was Bill Russell Wilson. Bill Russell was the NBA player, and Russell Wilson is the quarterback. Okay. Yeah, Will Chamberlain was good. Um Peyton Manning is a good way to go. You guys were both thinking good, but just incorrect. Alright. Next question is for Will. The youngest boxer ever to win a heavyweight title becomes the current US 100 meter record holder and fastest man in history to not win an Olympic medal.
Speaker 2Two sports I know less than nothing about. Yeah.
SpeakerBut can you come up with a name that you know that fits together? I don't know, maybe.
Speaker 2I don't even think I can come up with a name for either of them that even might be a plausible guess, to be honest. Okay. I'm sorry, I don't have any. That's fine, that's fine.
SpeakerAlright, Tyson, can you steal this one? Do you have any any boxing or hundred meter sprinting knowledge?
Speaker 1Um well I I was thinking about um Mike Tyson, but they don't know anyone with uh so do you know any sprinters whose first names are Tyson?
SpeakerI don't maybe Tyson Scott or Tyson Will Tyson Williams Okay, so Mike Tyson Scott, is that what you're going with? Yes, yes. Well, you know what? You were really close. You were really close. It was Mike Tyson. Oh, okay. It's Mike Tyson Gay. Tyson Gay is the sprinter. Oh, okay. Yeah, he currently holds the 100-meter record, and um for various reasons, he never won uh an Olympic medal, even though he was super fast. So after two games, Will is moving on to the final round at the end of the month. Congratulations to Will and thank you to Tyson for playing. Join us
Outro
Speakernext week as two more competitors match wits for a chance at being crowned quizzical champion. But before we go, the answer to the question I asked at the beginning: how long was the shortest recorded war in history? Do you guys know anything about this war? Do you have a guess? How long do you think the shortest war ever was? I'm guessing very, very short, but I don't know it. I would guess maybe about six months. Six months? Okay. Okay. Um hours.
Speaker 2I think it'll probably be in hours for some reason.
SpeakerYou're gonna go in hours, okay. It was about 40 minutes. Yeah. Back in 1896, Zanzibar's Sultan died under suspicious circumstances, by the way. And the British didn't really like who succeeded him. And in fact, just a few years earlier, they had signed an agreement to protect Zanzibar, but part of that agreement gave them basically veto rights to any new sultans. So they demanded that the new guy step down, he barricaded himself in the palace, and a short battle ensued. Zanzibar had about 500 casualties, and the British had one. The new Sultan got asylum from the Germans, and the British put their preferred guy in charge. So now you know, the shortest war in history lasted less than an hour. Another stitch in your growing cloak of questionable expertise. That's it for this week, and remember victory belongs to the mildly obsessed. I'm Scott, and this has been Quizzical.
